Music For My Soul

I realize that I live in the digital era and I'm supposed to play catch up despite the fact that no matter how advanced I think I am getting there is always something new coming around the corner. Thereby, the advent of ipods and iphones and blackberrys and high definition have all seemed to pass me by. I've tried (ok, only slightly), I've failed and I've admitted defeat. The touch screens make no sense to me. The concept of mapping my current location so that I become a little dot on a screen still creeps me out. Didn't anyone read 1984? I did and it rocked the core of my soul so hard at 11 years old that I haven't gotten over it.

Aside, when I was younger... before cell phones, before pagers, before there was more than one television in my house, my mom used to take me to folk festivals with her and her girlfriends. This is where I fell in love with folk music and psychedelic rock. Above all, I adored the women of folk and I believe that is because they represented things I wanted; independence, controlled anger, emotional clarity, talent, beauty. I've learned that music evolves and trends change and what was popular yesterday won't matter in a month. However, I feel that once in a great while a musician or a type of music grabs you, steals a little piece of you and you are never, ever the same.

So... as much as my technological knowledge has fallen to the wayside, I must admit that technology has helped me in my search for newer and more fabulous folk artists so I must commend the 2000s for this. Also, if you love folk music as much as I do then check these two women out; they have rocked my soul anew:

Susie Suh

Missy Higgins
